Carbon

The heat and electricity produced by the plant is renewable because it is fuelled primarily by biomass. The wood (including the cardboard!) absorbed carbon dioxide from the air when it was growing, which is released back into the air when we make electricity from it. The overall cycle – CO2 absorption during growth and then re-release on combustion – is carbon-neutral. This is recognised by the Government by the classification of our plants as producers of renewable energy.

The alternative – sending the wood and cardboard to landfill – also emits the carbon back into the air as the raw materials decompose, but without the benefit of producing electricity from it. The electricity we generate from the waste biomass displaces electricity that would otherwise be generated by burning coal. So Teal Energy’s power plants reduce the total amount of carbon emissions in the UK.

Air-borne pollutants

The key to the cleanliness of the advanced gasification process is that the major nasties associated with burning waste are never produced in the first place, and so cannot be emitted. The key to controlling the production of serious pollutants in a boiler is to control the flame temperature in every part of the combustion. In the two-stage advanced gasification process, the boiler is burning a gas rather than a solid, so a uniform flame temperature can be maintained and controlled, to eliminate the production of pollutants associated with burning solid matter. This makes the overall process extremely clean and emissions are well below the levels stipulated by the environment agency.

The air conditions in the boiler can be also be easily managed to control the production of nitrous oxides (NOx) – a consequence of burning anything in air. Lastly, to ensure any lingering traces of NOx are properly dealt with, there is a final stage filtering system (10,11) for the outlet gases.

Solid waste

Because the conversion of the organics in the biomass in the gasifier is so complete, there is very little solid matter left, m, most of this falls to the bottom of the gasifier where it is removed, and any remaining gas- borne particles are removed by a cyclone as the syngas exits the gasifier. Because of the uniform high flame temperate, solid waste is in the form an inert glass (rather than an ash) and can be used for the production of aggregates for the building industry.
